A Hundred Scenes of Awajima (Awajima Hyakkei) quietly became one of those shows people kept mentioning in group chats this year, mostly because of its watercolor visuals and the way it kept jumping between different students' lives instead of sticking to one lead. Now that season one has finished airing, the question on everyone's mind is simple. Is A Hundred Scenes of Awajima Season 2 actually happening, and if so, when?

A Quick Recap of Season One

The first season centers on Awajima Opera School and follows several generations of students who pass through its halls chasing the same dream of standing on stage. It looks like Wakana Tabata is going to be the main character early on, but the show keeps pulling focus toward other girls too, like Kinue Takehara, Emi Okabe, and the school's famously blunt teacher Ibuki, and honestly that's part of what makes it work.

By the finale, Wakana has turned everything she learned into a book exposing the messier, less glamorous side of the school, and that book instead exposes heavy institutional rot, forcing both current and former students to reflect deeply. The weight of that storytelling responsibility was something voice actress Niina Nakabayashi, who played Wakana, took deeply seriously. In the official finale interview on Animatetimes, she shared,

“I was conscious that Wakana-chan was trying to tell us that this is everyone's story, while focusing on the story of each person, rather than just letting the words flow” - Niina Nakabayashi, VA of Wakana

It's a genuinely satisfying way to end things, which is actually one reason people aren't sure a sequel is a sure thing.

So When Might Season 2 Come Out

Here's the honest answer. Nobody knows yet, and neither Crunchyroll nor Madhouse has said anything official. Season one wrapped up its major storylines pretty cleanly across its 12 episodes, and shows that end that neatly don't always get sequels, since the studio might feel like the story already said what it needed to say. But, what is clear is how seriously the creative team felt about this story from the very beginning. When the anime was first announced, director Morio Asaka shared an official statement that captured the whole spirit of the show, writing:

"Light and shadow. Past and future. Success and failure. These appear to be opposites, but they are actually words that sit side by side." - Morio Asaka, Director

That said, Takako Shimura's original manga has more material than what made it into the anime, so there's still stuff to adapt if Madhouse wants to go back. Going purely off how long similar seasonal dramas usually take between announcement and release, a reasonable guess would put a second season sometime in the following year or two, assuming production even gets greenlit soon. Again, this is just a guess based on how these things typically play out, not a confirmed date.

In the meantime, you can rewatch season one right now on Crunchyroll, and if you need a refresher on why this show hit people so hard, the official trailer for Season 1 is worth watching in the middle of you rewatch.

What Content Could Season 2 Actually Cover

If the show does come back, there's plenty left to work with. Based on where the manga goes and how the anime has been structured so far, here's what a second season could realistically dig into.

  1. A newer generation of students dealing with life at Awajima after Wakana's book goes public, and how that changes the school's culture going forward
  2. More screen time for side characters who only got a few minutes in season one, since even those brief appearances managed to hit surprisingly hard
  3. The lasting impact of Ibuki's years as a teacher and how her former students carry pieces of her forward
  4. Extra material around Emi's family, since her story technically keeps going through her husband and son
  5. Possibly a timeline set closer to the present day, keeping the same generation hopping structure that defined the first season

What Longtime Viewers Are Saying

People who stuck with season one have been pretty vocal about how much the jumping between time periods and the huge cast confused them early on, but a lot of that confusion turned into genuine appreciation once things clicked. Viewers started picking up on small background details like old calendars or flip phones just to figure out which decade a scene was even happening in, and that kind of attentive watching built a fanbase that would absolutely show up again for more.

There's also a lot of love for how the show treats every character with dignity, even the ones who never made it anywhere near the stage. That's probably the biggest reason people want a second season, not just to see more plot happen but to get more of that same quiet care applied to new characters connected to the school.

Why A Sequel Would Need to Earn Its Place

Some fans have pointed out, fairly enough, that the ending already feels complete on its own terms, so any follow up season would need a real reason to exist rather than just stretching the story further. It's a fair worry, and honestly a good sign that people care enough about the show to want it done right instead of just done.

If you're into tracking anime that might be getting new seasons, it's worth checking out a couple of other speculation pieces too, including one on Petals of Reincarnation Season 2 and another looking at The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen Season 3, both covering similar release timing questions.

For now, Awajima Hyakkei fans are stuck doing what most of us do while waiting, which is rewatching season one, noticing new little details in the background art, and hoping this quietly devastating show about chasing stardom gets one more chapter.
