If you have been keeping up with anime this winter, you already know that Journal with Witch (Japanese title: Ikoku Nikki) was something truly special. It did not have flashy fight scenes or over-the-top drama. It was just two very different people learning to live with each other and with grief. And somehow, that was more than enough to make it one of the most talked-about anime of the season. Now that the final episode has aired, fans everywhere are asking the same thing. Will there be a Journal with Witch Season 2?

How Season 1 Ended and Why It Hurt So Much

The story follows Makio Kodai, a 35-year-old novelist who lives alone and likes it that way, and Asa Takumi, her 15-year-old niece who moves in after losing both her parents. They clash, they misunderstand each other, and then slowly, quietly, they figure each other out.

The final episode brings Asa to her first ever public performance, singing at a street concourse in a moment that feels small but hits incredibly hard. A time-skip then shows Asa and her best friend Emiri years later, still close, still going. It felt like a goodbye.

What made the ending bittersweet was that it was not a complete adaptation. The anime covered roughly 34 to 36 out of 54 total manga chapters. The studio even pulled scenes from the very last manga chapter to craft a sense of closure, which for many was a clear signal that they were not expecting to come back for more. If you want to experience the emotional weight of Season 1 before diving into this article, go check out the Season 1 trailer below and see what made this show so unforgettable.

Is Season 2 Actually Happening

Honestly, nothing is confirmed yet. As of now there has been no official renewal announcement, no production update, and no statement from Studio Shuka about continuing the series. The way the finale was structured, borrowing from the manga's ending to give the anime its own sense of resolution, does not exactly scream "see you next season."

That said, hope is not completely gone. If a second season does get approved somewhere down the line, productions like this typically take around 12 to 18 months from announcement to air date. Looking at how Season 1 played out, it was announced back in May 2024 and did not premiere until January 2026. So realistically, even if Season 2 gets confirmed soon, late 2027 would be the absolute earliest fans could expect it to arrive. It is a long wait, but not impossible.

What a Season 2 Could Actually Cover

There are around 20 unadapted manga chapters remaining, which may not be enough for a standard 12-episode run but is definitely enough for something meaningful. Here is what a potential Season 2 could explore based on what the manga still has to offer:

  1. The full arc around Makio and Kasamachi's relationship and whether she finally lets someone in
  2. More of Asa figuring out who she wants to be beyond that first performance
  3. A powerful scene where Makio tells Asa she will always have a place to stay, which many consider one of the most emotional moments in the entire manga
  4. Emiri's story continuing, including whether Asa ever truly understands her best friend
  5. A more complete resolution to Makio's complicated grief over her sister, which the anime only partially touched on. That feeling was embedded from the very first episode, where Makio quietly recognizes Asa's pain with just one line:
"I get it. This is what they call… loneliness." - Makio Kodai

Many of these are moments that manga readers genuinely grieved not seeing adapted. They are not filler. They are the heart of the story's second half.

What People Are Thinking About a Comeback

The reaction to the finale has been a mix of gratitude and longing. Most people seem to agree that the anime was likely made as a one-season project and that the team did their best to land a satisfying ending within those limits. At the same time, nobody is quite ready to let go of Makio and Asa just yet. Even director Miyuki Oshiro openly shared her admiration for the source material in an official Animate Times interview, saying:

"I believe there doesn't exist another work that depicts negative emotions quite as plainly as this one." - Miyuki Oshiro, Director

The most realistic hope floating around is that the remaining chapters could be adapted as a movie or a short OVA series rather than a full second season. That would actually make sense given the amount of material left. You can currently stream the full series on Crunchyroll and if you have not read the manga yet, starting from Chapter 1 is strongly recommended since a lot of meaningful dialogue was cut from the anime adaptation. Also, if you enjoy keeping up with anime continuations, we recently covered Fate/Strange Fake Season 2 and Frieren Season 3 which are worth checking out too.

Journal with Witch earned an 8.79 on MyAnimeList and that number says everything. This story deserves a proper ending in animated form. Here is hoping the people in charge feel the same way.
