Well, that didn't take long. TV Asahi confirmed Akane Banashi Season 2 barely after the credits rolled on Season 1's finale, and it's landing in January 2027. Seven months isn't nothing, but compared to the multi-year waits anime fans usually endure, it practically feels like next week.

Along with the announcement came a new teaser trailer and a wave of cast reveals, so there's already plenty to chew on before the wait is even over.

Catching Up: What Happened in Season 1

Quick refresher. Akane Osaki grew up idolizing her father's rakugo performances until something happened during his shin'uchi promotion test that shook her whole world. Fast forward six years, and she's a high schooler determined to claw her way into the brutally competitive rakugo scene herself.

Most of Season 1 centered on her secretly training under Shiguma Arakawa, her dad's old teacher, building toward the Karaku Cup arc. By the end, Akane's graduated high school and officially become Shiguma's apprentice, taking on the professional name Akane Arakawa.

So, What's Season 2 Actually About?

Going by the manga, the next season adapts the Apprentice Arc (some call it the Zenza Training Arc). Here's the gist of what's coming:

  1. Akane starting out as a working rakugoka under her new name
  2. The awkward reality of being the newest apprentice in Shiguma's group
  3. More time with the Rakugo Federation, who barely got introduced before Season 1 ended
  4. Bigger roles for Ryu'un Kenputei, Urara Ransaika, and Chocho Konjakutei
  5. Akane realizing talent alone won't get her very far in this world

That last point is something the show has always handled well - the idea that raw skill only takes you so far. One of her senior disciples, Maikeru Arakawa, puts it bluntly in the manga:

"Singing, dancing, music, acrobatics... Being broadly skilled in the arts will get you far. Rakugo is not such a straightforward discipline that you can become a master just by practicing how you speak." - Maikeru Arakawa

The cast additions are honestly kind of stacked.

  1. Hochu Otsuka as Miroku Kashiwaya
  2. Ryotaro Okiayu as Shomei Tsubakiya
  3. Hiroshi Naka as Enso Sanmeitei
  4. Mutsumi Tamura as Urara Ransaika
  5. Shinichiro Miki as Ryu'un Kenputei
  6. Tomokazu Seki as Chocho Konjakutei

Anime fans who pay attention to voice work will recognize a lot of these names immediately. Also, check out the official announcement trailer for Akane Banashi Season 2 below and get a first look at what's in store when the anime returns in January 2027.

Why People Are So Hyped

The response online has been pretty overwhelmingly positive. A lot of fans keep joking that the Rakugo Federation meeting looked like something ripped straight out of a shounen battle anime - all these intimidating masters sitting together like some secret council deciding someone's fate. It's a silly comparison on its face, but it says a lot about how much weight the show manages to carry without a single fight scene.

Shiguma's gotten a ton of love too. People keep bringing up those quiet scenes of him wandering through town, chatting with neighbors, just quietly reflecting on how far Akane's come. Combined with that graduation scene near the end, it's left more than a few people a little teary. And it is hard not to feel that weight when you remember what drives Akane in the first place - as she herself puts it,

"I'm the only one who's sad about it... but that's exactly why I decided - I will become a shin'uchi and prove that my father's rakugo was truly great." - Akane Osaki

There's also been some appreciation for the smaller details - like how Akane's stage name ties back to her actual birth name, which her father picked because it reflects the color of a sunset. Small stuff like that is part of why the show's built such a loyal following so fast.

Where to Watch Before It Returns

If you haven't caught Season 1, or just want a rewatch before January, it's on Netflix, which has been dropping the English dub weekly - easy enough to binge before the new season hits.

And if you're the type who likes tracking every upcoming release, it's worth checking out what's happening with I Got a Cheat Skill Season 2 and Witch Hat Atelier Season 2 as well.

With January 2027 now locked in, the wait shouldn't feel too brutal. New characters, a fresh arc, and Akane stepping fully into her identity as a professional - Season 2 has a lot riding on it, and so far, it looks ready to deliver.
