Coming this January, Tune In to the Midnight Heart (Mayonaka Hāto Chūn) is shaping up to be one of the most exciting new additions to the romcom anime scene. Blending heartfelt comedy with a slice of mystery, it tells a story that feels both modern and nostalgic. With a bold main character, a colorful cast of heroines, and a charming premise centered on broadcasting and voice acting, it’s already building up serious hype among anime fans.

The Premise That Hooks You Instantly

Years ago, a boy named Arisu Yamabuki stumbled upon the voice of a livestreamer called “Apollo.” For a lonely, upper-class kid like him, her soothing late-night broadcasts became a quiet source of comfort. But then, without warning, she disappeared. No last message. No farewell stream. Just silence.

Now a high school student, Arisu transfers to a new school with a plan - he’s narrowed down Apollo’s possible identity to a handful of students. More specifically, to four girls in the school’s broadcasting club. Each girl has dreams tied to their voice - one wants to be a singer, another a voice actress, a third a VTuber, and the fourth an announcer. Any of them could be Apollo.

But here’s the twist: Apollo doesn’t want to be found. She’s hiding her identity for a reason, and Arisu will have to earn their trust - and maybe even change himself - if he wants to uncover the truth.

When and Where to Watch

The anime officially premieres on January 6, 2026, airing at 11 PM JST on Kansai TV and Fuji TV’s new "Ka-Anival!!" programming block. For those lucky enough to be in Tokyo, there’s a special advance screening of the first two episodes on January 4 at the I'M A SHOW theater. The lottery for tickets is already underway and runs through November 9, 2025.

While the international streaming platform hasn’t been announced yet, it’s widely expected that Crunchyroll will pick it up, as they’ve consistently streamed other big Kodansha anime titles in the past.

What Makes This One Stand Out

Let’s be real. Romcom anime are everywhere, and not all of them leave a lasting impression. What sets this series apart is simple: the main character is actually interesting.

Arisu isn’t your usual awkward or indecisive guy stuck in the middle of a love polygon. He’s confident. He takes action. He’s eccentric in the best way - and that’s something that throws off the girls just as much as it charms them. It’s refreshing to have a male lead who isn’t just reacting to what’s happening around him but actually drives the story forward.

In fact, many have already called him one of the most likable and entertaining MCs the genre has seen in years. And it shows. His presence shifts the typical romcom balance, often making the girls play the “straight man” role to his wild energy - something rarely seen in these setups.

Each girl in the broadcasting club has her own dream and personality, and none of them feel like filler. They’re all fully realized characters with goals that extend beyond the romance.

  1. Rikka Inohana is the blunt and witty aspiring singer, never afraid to speak her mind.
  2. Nene Himekawa, the would-be voice actress, has strong tsundere vibes and a lot of emotional depth.
  3. Iko Kirino is a bold and expressive VTuber who balances shy traits with bursts of confident humor.
  4. Shinobu Uzuki, the quiet yet dependable announcer, adds a calm presence that balances the chaos.

Adding even more star power is Kana Hanazawa, who plays Lemon Ando, one of the characters not featured in the main visual but already loved by manga readers.

The Studio and Staff Bringing It to Life

The anime is being handled by Studio GEKKOU, with Masayuki Takahashi directing (previously known for Butareba: The Story of a Man Turned into a Pig). The script is in the hands of Yukie Sugawara, who’s worked on Overlord and Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again. That’s a solid team with the chops to balance heart, humor, and pacing. As the director explains,

“We are working every day so the appeal of the original can be conveyed not only through visuals but also through sound, creating a more three dimensional work that satisfies longtime readers and brings in new fans” - Masayuki Takahashi, Director

Character designs are being adapted by Tomoyuki Shitaya, the artist behind Food Wars! and 2.5 Dimensional Seduction. So far, the visuals shown in the trailers and key visuals have stayed true to the manga’s art, which has often been praised for its clean, expressive style.

A Soundtrack That Matches the Vibe

Given the story revolves around voices and sound, the music had to hit just right - and it looks like it will. The opening theme, “Tsuki ni Mukatte Ute” by Hoshimachi Suisei, brings a blend of pop and emotion that matches the show’s tone. The ending theme, “Koe no Kiseki” by Soala, also complements the quieter, more reflective side of the story.

You can watch the full second trailer down below, which features both songs and offers a solid preview of the animation, energy, and character voices.

A Mystery That Keeps the Story Engaging

The biggest question of the series is simple: Who is Apollo? But the show doesn’t treat that mystery like a gimmick. It’s tied deeply to the emotional arcs of the characters. Apollo isn’t hiding for the sake of plot convenience - she has her reasons, and those reasons matter.

What makes it even more interesting is how similar all the girls sound. In fact, an earlier promotional video had Ayane Sakura voicing all four girls just to hint the mystery. Will the anime do something similar? Time will tell, but the voice acting challenge here adds another layer of fun to the experience.

Final Thoughts

Tune In to the Midnight Heart isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel. Instead, it sharpens every element of the classic romcom formula - strong characters, meaningful stakes, and a mystery that gives the romance weight. It’s emotionally engaging, occasionally hilarious, and totally binge-worthy.
