So, here's the thing about Kujima Utaeba Ie Hororo, nobody really expected to fall for it. But somehow this weird warbling bird show ended up on a ton of "favorite of the season" lists, and now everyone's asking the same question online, will there be a Kujima Season 2? The show, which international viewers know as Kujima: Why Sing, When You Can Warble?, closed out its first run with a goodbye that actually made people tear up, and honestly, that ending left the door wide open for more.

A Quick Look Back at Season 1

If you somehow missed it, Season 1 kicks off when a strange, mysterious creature born in Russia with an appearance like a bird or penguin named Kujima basically wanders into the life of the Kouda family. Older brother Suguru's first reaction, understandably, is to wonder if he's about to witness a home invasion. It's a fair question honestly. Even the voice actress herself described that exact feeling when she first came across the manga before auditioning, saying,

"What kind of creature is this!? There's this mysterious creature called Kujima, but everyday life is unfolding, and Kujima is there so naturally. It's so natural that it makes you wonder, 'Does Kujima really exist in the real world?'" - Yuria Kōzuki, VA of Kujima

From that chaotic start, though, the show quietly turns into something a lot warmer than its premise suggests. By the finale Kujima has nudged every member of the family into growing a little, then flies off to Russia with a promise to come back, and yeah, he does. Arata gets his reunion, everyone cries a bit, roll credits.

When Could Season 2 Actually Happen

Here's the tricky part. The manga only ran 5 volumes, and the anime used all of it. There's no unused chapters sitting in a drawer waiting to be adapted, which is probably why the show's current status is still just listed as fate to be determined instead of a confirmed green light.

That doesn't mean it's dead in the water though. Original anime that do well tend to get another shot eventually, so if we're being realistic here, an announcement (if one comes) would probably show up sometime around late 2027, with an actual Season 2 more likely airing in 2028. All of that depends on how the show keeps performing on streaming and whether the author wants to keep writing in this world at all.

What Season 2 Could Possibly Cover

Since the main manga is done, any follow up season would have to lean on extra material instead of fresh chapters. That said, even pulling off Season 1 was no small task. A few things could realistically make the cut.

  1. Two bonus short stories from Akira Konno's book Helpful, one where Kujima learns to cook with Maxim back in Russia, and another set just after he returns home
  2. A peek at what Kujima's actual life in Siberia looks like, since Season 1 never really went there
  3. More Suguru content, especially since he ends up taking Russian classes at university, which says a lot about how much that bird got under his skin
  4. Some extra screen time for Maxim, who fans keep bringing up even though he barely appeared

Want to rewatch before diving into theories? Season 1 is streaming on Crunchyroll, and the official Season 1 trailer is worth a rewatch too, it's a nice reminder of just how strange this show's pitch sounded before it won everyone over.

Why This Weird Little Show Got Under People's Skin

A lot of the buzz around a possible Season 2 comes down to how nobody saw Season 1 coming. People kept saying they only clicked play because the title sounded ridiculous, or because of the bird's odd design, and then somehow it turned into one of their favorite shows that season. The soundtrack gets brought up constantly too, especially the Galileo Galilei opening theme, which apparently barely anyone skipped. Part of what made the show feel so alive was the genuine commitment behind it. In a real interview with MANTANWEB, Kujima's voice actress Yuria Kōzuki revealed just how deep she went to find the character, saying,

"I tried to return to my childlike self and remember that novelty. And then there's the beak. Kujima has a beak, and I wondered what it felt like, so I decided to try it myself by holding a toilet paper roll to my mouth and talking through it." - Yuria Kōzuki, VA of Kujima.

There's also just something about watching a strange creature slowly figure out how to be part of a family (even if his attempt at pretending to be a dog didn't really fool anyone) that hit differently for a lot of viewers. It's not a flashy show. It doesn't really do big dramatic swings. The finale even leaned into a slower, montage heavy format showing everyone's quiet growth over the months Kujima was away, and that patience seemed to be exactly what people liked about it.

What Fans Actually Want from A Second Season

If Season 2 does happen, the general hope seems to be that it doesn't try to fix something that isn't broken. Nobody's asking for more plot or higher stakes, people just want more of that same slow, cozy pacing that made Season 1 work in the first place.

While everyone waits for actual news, it might be worth checking out a couple of other speculation pieces floating around, like the ones covering Ichijyoma Mankitsu Gurashi Season 2 and A Hundred Scenes of Awajima Season 2, since they're dealing with pretty similar questions about original anime getting a second chance.

For now, nothing's official. But given how much affection this odd little bird managed to earn in just twelve episodes, it wouldn't be shocking if news dropped sooner than people expect.
