Will Vinland Saga Get a Season 3? Here's Everything We Know So Far

If you’re a fan of long historical epics, dark Viking tales, or simply good storytelling that stirs the soul, you’ve probably already discovered Vinland Saga. Since it first appeared on our screens back in 2019, this anime has carved out a special place in the hearts of viewers with its powerful narrative, morally complex characters, and emotional depth. But as Season 2 ended with Thorfinn gazing into the northern lights, one question now echoes louder than a battle cry across the fjords: Will Vinland Saga get a Season 3?
Let’s take a deep dive into what’s happened so far, what could come next, and why hope for a third season is far from lost.
From Blood to Redemption Vinland Saga Season 1 & 2 Recap
To truly understand the impact of a potential Season 3, we need to revisit the journey that’s brought us here.
Season 1 introduced us to Thorfinn Thordarson, a boy who idolized his father, Thors - once a legendary warrior who had turned away from bloodshed. When Thors is killed by the cunning mercenary Askeladd, Thorfinn's innocence dies with him. In one of anime’s most unique revenge arcs, Thorfinn doesn’t slay the killer and move on. Instead, he joins Askeladd’s band of Vikings, growing up in the same world that destroyed his childhood, sharpening his skills and hatred, all while serving the man he wants to kill.
But Vinland Saga isn’t just about swords and vengeance. It's about humanity, legacy, and the burden of violence. This becomes even more apparent in Season 2, a slower, and more reflective installment, choosing to explore deeper themes rather than relying on action.
In Season 2, Thorfinn is no longer the fiery warrior boy we once knew. Stripped of purpose after Askeladd’s death, he finds himself a slave on the Ketil farm, where he meets Einar, a fellow slave whose past was also scorched by war. Together, they till the land, endure abuse, and slowly build a fragile friendship that breathes life back into Thorfinn’s soul. He renounces violence, dreams of building a peaceful land free from the cruelty of kings and conquerors. This dream is called Vinland.
Where Season 1 showed us how the world breaks a man, Season 2 showed us how he tries to heal.
Is Vinland Saga Season 3 Happening?
Let’s get this out of the way! Season 3 has not yet been officially confirmed. We know, it’s agonizing. But don’t abandon the ship just yet.
There are several promising signs that point toward a third season becoming a reality. For one, there’s still plenty of manga left to adapt, only about 100 of the 190+ chapters have been covered so far. The next major arc, the Eastern Expedition Arc (chapters 100–166), offers a whole new landscape of storytelling that’s ready for adaptation.
Takahiko Abiru, the series’ character designer, added fuel to the hopeful fire after season 2’s finale. In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), he thanked fans and staff alike for staying with the story, ending with a cryptic but exciting note: “Thorfinn’s journey will continue.”
While this doesn’t equate to a studio announcement or official greenlight, it’s a strong hint that the production team hasn’t closed the book on Vinland Saga just yet.
So, When Might We See Vinland Saga Season 3?
If you're looking to mark your calendar, you may need a pencil, not a pen. Based on the release timeline so far:
- Season 1 aired in 2019.
- Season 2 was officially announced in 2022 and released in 2023.
With that pattern, the earliest a new season might appear is early 2026, but winter 2026 is a more realistic estimate. Why the delay? MAPPA, the studio behind Season 2, is incredibly busy with other massive titles like Jujutsu Kaisen, and Chainsaw Man. If MAPPA continues its involvement, we may have to be patient as the studio juggles its packed schedule.
Additionally, creator Makoto Yukimura has hinted that the manga is nearing its conclusion. The anime might be waiting for the manga to finish so the remaining story can be adapted in a cohesive arc. If an announcement is coming, we may hear something solid by the end of 2025.
What Could Season 3 Be About?
Should Vinland Saga Season 3 set sail, it will likely cover the Eastern Expedition Arc, which is one of the manga’s most eventful and politically charged storylines.
After gaining freedom in Season 2, Thorfinn and Einar set their sights on Vinland. But dreams aren’t built on soil alone, they need funding. So, the two embark on a journey east, all the way to Greece, to earn money for their peaceful colony. But it wouldn’t be Vinland Saga without conflict.
Along the way, Thorfinn is pulled into the chaos of the Jomsviking civil war. He’ll confront new enemies, challenge old ideologies, and continue walking the treacherous path between peace and survival. New characters like the ruthless Garm and the fiercely intelligent Hild will test Thorfinn in ways he’s never experienced. If you thought Season 2 was emotionally rich, Season 3 will dig even deeper into the soul of this saga.
Who’s Expected to Return in Season 3?
While the full cast remains unconfirmed (since, again, season 3 hasn’t been announced), it’s safe to assume key characters will return:
- Thorfinn (voiced by Yuto Uemura / Aleks Le)
- Einar (Shunsuke Takeuchi / Alejandro Saab)
- Canute (Kensho Ono / Griffin Burns)
- Leif Erikson (Yoji Ueda / John Swasey)
- Thorkell (Akio Otsuka / Patrick Seitz)
And with the new arc comes new voices, including the aforementioned Garm, a deadly warrior who may become Thorfinn’s next major antagonist, and Hild, a mysterious hunter with a tragic past.
Where Can You Watch Vinland Saga?
While you wait for season 3 news, why not rewatch or catch up on the series? Both Season 1 and Season 2 of Vinland Saga are available on Netflix, Crunchyroll, and Amazon Prime Video. A Saga Worth Waiting For!
In the world of anime, few series possess the depth, artistry, and emotional gravity of Vinland Saga. It’s more than just Vikings and violence - it’s about change, forgiveness, and the weight of one's past. Season 3 may not be officially confirmed, but all signs point toward its eventual arrival. Until then, fans will wait, just as Thorfinn once waited for purpose in a world of chaos.
And if there’s one thing Vinland Saga has taught us, it’s this: the journey is always worth it.
