If you have been keeping up with the wave of Korean webtoon adaptations lately, then you already know things are getting exciting. Tomb Raider King is the latest series making the jump from page to screen, and it is set to hit Crunchyroll on July 8, 2026. Known as Tōkutsuō in Japanese and Dogul Wang in Korean, this revenge-fuelled action series has been building buzz for a while now, and honestly, the closer we get to the release date, the more the excitement is starting to feel very real.

The Web Novel That Sparked the Whole Thing

So where did this all begin? The original web novel by Sanji Jiksong launched back in November 2016 and was later turned into a webtoon that wrapped up in 2023 after more than 400 chapters. Yen Press has also been putting out an official English print translation of the webtoon.

The story follows Jooheon Suh, a relic raider who spends his days sneaking into ancient tombs on behalf of his employer. After getting completely backstabbed and left for dead, he somehow ends up thrown 15 years into the past. Now armed with everything he knows about how the relic world plays out, he is done playing by anyone else's rules.

What the Animated Series Actually Looks Like

Right, so let us talk about the production side of things because this is where it gets genuinely interesting. The anime is being handled by Studio EEK, with Seung Wook Woo sitting in the director's chair. He is no stranger to the craft, having served as an episode director on Hunter x Hunter, so there is real experience behind this one.

Sound direction is being handled by Kisuke Koizumi, whose credits include Chainsaw Man and Dororo, which is a pretty strong signal that the audio side of things is not being treated as an afterthought. The opening theme "SHOW DOWN" by QWER has already dropped in creditless form online, and it genuinely slaps.

A Voice Cast That Deserves Its Own Spotlight

This is honestly one of the most exciting parts of the whole announcement. Yoshimasa Hosoya, who voiced Reiner in Attack on Titan and Wolfwood in Trigun Stampede, is taking on the lead role of Jooheon Suh. That casting alone should tell you the production is not cutting corners. He shared his thoughts on the role in an official cast comment, saying:

"Every episode has a huge amount of lines and it's tough, but thanks to the passionate performances of the cast, I'm really enjoying the revenge." - Yoshimasa Hosoya, VA of Jooheon Suh

Saori Hayami voices Irene Holton, the so-called "King of Bankruptcy," and if you know her from SPY x FAMILY or Demon Slayer, you already know she brings something special to every role she touches. She also shared her reaction to the role ahead of the premiere:

"Irene has a cute and gentle personality, but she is also someone who was once known as the 'King of Bankruptcy.' I am really enjoying recording the sessions as her inner self gradually comes to light through her interactions with Jooheon. - Saori Hayami, voice of Irene Holton

Throw in Junichi Suwabe, the voice of Sukuna in Jujutsu Kaisen, and you have got a cast that could carry almost anything.

What the First Season Will Probably Cover

Nobody has confirmed an exact episode breakdown yet, but based on what the source material sets up early on, here is what the first season will most likely dig into:

  1. Jooheon's betrayal and his unexpected trip back 15 years into the past
  2. His early moves to grab powerful relics before his enemies even know they exist
  3. First meetings with Irene Holton and the larger relic-hunting world
  4. The beginnings of his revenge plot against former employer Taejoon Kwono
  5. Tomb raids packed with mythology and relic lore that actually makes the world feel alive

Given that the webtoon runs well past 400 chapters, a single season will almost certainly stick to the early arcs, which is probably a good thing for reasons we will get into next

What People Actually Think About This Adaptation

Here is the honest picture. Opinions on the Tomb Raider King manhwa are genuinely split, and nobody is pretending otherwise. A lot of readers really enjoyed the early chapters, particularly the mythology-heavy relic storylines and the satisfying revenge setup. The general feeling is that the first stretch of the story is fun, fast, and easy to get into.

Where things get complicated is around the midpoint of the manhwa, where the pacing starts to drag and the story reportedly loses some of its early energy. The concern floating around is whether those same issues will show up in the anime if it runs long enough. But here is the thing, a tight 12-episode season that ends before the story overstays its welcome could genuinely surprise people.

The Solo Leveling comparison keeps coming up, and fans are hoping this gets a similar level of animation polish. Make sure to check out our recent pieces on Witch Hat Atelier Season 2 and Tokyo Revengers Season 4 if you want more upcoming anime coverage. You can catch the full trailer down below, and Tomb Raider King starts streaming on Crunchyroll on July 8. It is worth watching at least the first episode before making up your mind.
