Tomb Raider King Season 2 Release Date and Fan Buzz

Fans can't stop talking about Tomb Raider King (Dogul Wang), and with the first season almost done, everyone's already asking the obvious question. Is a second season actually happening? The Korean animated adaptation of SAN.G's webtoon has spent its entire run being compared to Solo Leveling, for better or worse, and now that the story is heading toward its finale, it feels like the right moment to look at what a Season 2 might actually bring.

Where Season 1 Left Things Off

So far the story has bounced between Jooheon slowly climbing the power ladder and settling old scores. Early on he's working under Taejoon Kwon, a chaebol heir who uses Jooheon's raiding talent and then leaves him for dead once he's no longer useful. That betrayal is basically the whole engine of the plot, since it's what sends him back in time in the first place. Since then, it's been a lot of tomb clearing, alliance building, and inching closer to the people who wronged him.

There's also Irene Holton, whose connection with Jooheon has been getting more screen time lately. One scene had her caught up in a relic curse and clinging to him once it wore off, and yeah, plenty of people immediately thought of that early Jinwoo and Cha Haein moment. The relics themselves are honestly one of the show's better ideas, pulling from Greek mythology and other folklore instead of just copying a straightforward level up system. Character designer Hyun Joung Lee put it well when she said,

Episode 11 is probably going to ramp up the showdown between Jooheon and the people who set him up the first time around, since that thread has been building for a while now. Episode 12 should wrap up this arc, though don't expect everything to be tied in a neat little bow. Given how these stories usually go, a cliffhanger seems more likely than a clean ending, especially if there's any hope of a sequel. Expect a bit more movement on the Irene relationship too, plus probably some hints about who or what is actually behind the relics in the first place.

What Season 2 Might Actually Cover

Assuming it gets made, the manhwa gives plenty to pull from once the anime catches up to where Season 1 leaves off. Some of the likely directions:

1. A deeper look at how the tomb hierarchy works and who the stronger relic users actually are
2. More conflict between the chaebol groups fighting over raiding rights
3. New relics tied to mythologies outside the Greek stuff we've seen so far
4. More development between Jooheon and Irene
5. Bigger, flashier fights now that Jooheon's power has grown

Worth pausing here to say the Season 1 trailer is still up if anyone wants a refresher on the animation style before speculating further on what a sequel could look like.

The Renewal Question

Here's the tricky part. On a pure production level, there's nothing wrong with this show. The animation hasn't dipped in quality at any point during the run, which says a lot about the studio and Kakao actually being capable of carrying this further without cutting corners. So, if it doesn't get renewed, it probably won't be because the show fell apart behind the scenes. Director Seung Wook Woo summed up the pressure of leading the project when he said,

The bigger issue is reputation. The series has taken a beating from review bombing in Korea, not unlike what happened to Mushoku Tensei Season 3 recently, and overseas it's been stuck with the nickname "Temu Solo Leveling," which isn't exactly a flattering comparison to shake off.

Why The Comparisons Might Not Be Fair

A lot of the criticism comes down to Jooheon just not being as likable early on. He starts off angry, vengeful, and pretty selfish, which is a rougher entry point than Jinwoo's slow build from nobody to powerhouse. Some viewers just can't get past that, fair or not.

At the same time, it's worth remembering that the original web novels for both Tomb Raider King and Solo Leveling began publication only months apart in 2016. Because of this, the 'copycat' label isn't accurate; it is simply a case of parallel genre trends rather than one copying the other. Whether that context changes people's minds is another story, and ultimately it'll come down to streaming numbers rather than online opinions when the studio decides on a Season 2. For now, fans will have to wait until the finale drops on September 23 to see where things stand.
