So that finale happened, and honestly, half of anime Twitter still hasn't recovered. Nippon Sangoku: The Three Nations of the Crimson Sun Season 2 is basically all anyone's been talking about since episode 12 dropped, and for good reason. Between the leaked renewal news and a manga that's apparently flying off shelves in Japan, this one feels less like wishful thinking and more like it's actually happening. Here's the full breakdown of what's going on.

So, When Is It Actually Coming Out

Let's get the honest answer out of the way first, because nobody wants fake hype. There's no official press release from Amazon yet. What we do have is a leak from an account with a solid track record, and that screenshot has been making the rounds ever since. Most people are betting the real confirmation drops once the finale airs on Japanese TV, since Prime Video tends to release episodes earlier than the domestic broadcast.

As for a timeline, don't expect anything too soon. Anime production these days takes roughly a year and a half at bare minimum, sometimes way longer. Studio Kafka is a pretty small studio, and if they end up needing extra time to keep that gorgeous animation consistent, we could be looking at late 2027 or even into 2028 before new episodes hit. Not exactly what fans want to hear, but the manga has already crossed a million copies sold since the show started airing, so there's clearly money and motivation behind making this happen properly instead of rushing it.

Quick Refresher on What Went Down in Season 1

If you need your memory jogged, here's the short version. The show opens with Aoteru Misumi, this quiet, bookish agricultural officer, whose entire world gets flipped when his wife Saki is publicly executed after standing up to a corrupt official. That single moment turns him from a guy who just wanted a peaceful life into someone plotting to reunite a Japan that's splintered into three warring nations. It's the kind of character switch that hits you hard, and it's summed up perfectly in the words Misumi himself delivers in episode 2:

"My purpose is to fulfill the vow I made to my beloved wife, who was executed by Lord Taira... I came here, determined to change this world." - Aoteru Misumi

By the back half of the season things get genuinely brutal, with Misumi teaming up with strategists Kaku and Ryumon to pull off a winter ambush against the Seii army. Just when peace looks possible, the show's main antagonist Denki Taira flips the entire board, framing an assassination to seize total control and tossing Misumi and Ryumon straight into prison. If you haven't watched or just want to relive it, the season 1 trailer is worth a rewatch to see how much the tone shifts from where it starts.

What Season 2 Will Probably Cover Based on the Manga

Season 1 left off right around chapter 22. Going off the pacing so far, here's roughly what people expect the next season to dig into.

  1. Misumi and Ryumon scheming from behind bars, because that man is not done yet
  2. Tsune working an angle on the outside now that he's free, possibly to help Misumi and Ryumon
  3. Buo's political situation coming into focus, especially Himehito and hints of a succession issue
  4. Taira consolidating his grip on power while resentment builds around him
  5. Growing tension between Yamato and the still mysterious Buo nation
  6. More on where Asama's loyalties really lie, since fans suspect he'll eventually side with Misumi

You can binge the whole first season right now on Prime Video if you're catching up before all this drops.

Why People Cannot Stop Talking About This Show

The fan energy around this show has been kind of wild honestly. People keep comparing its sales trajectory to My Dress-Up Darling, which saw a massive spike after its second season, and there's genuine belief Nippon Sangoku is heading the same direction. Bookstores in Japan have reportedly been running out of copies, and that Animage magazine issue with the show on the cover sold out almost instantly. A big part of that comes down to the intentional craft behind the visuals, something director Kazuaki Terasawa spoke about openly in his Anime News Network interview:

"I wanted to visually express the worldview of a Japan whose civilization has regressed back to the Meiji era... rather than relying on the Western approach of building form through light and shadow, we asked the art team to incorporate the sensibility of traditional Japanese painting." - Kazuaki Terasawa, Director.

There's also a lot of hope floating around that this success finally gets an official English translation going, since right now overseas fans are stuck with unofficial scanlations that barely stay a few chapters ahead of the anime. But past the numbers, what keeps people hooked is just how the story handles its brutal political twists without losing the emotional core, plus that black and white to color visual shift everyone's still talking about months later.

While waiting on real confirmation, it's a good time to catch up on other stuff too. We recently covered updates on MarriageToxin season 2 and I Got a Cheat Skill season 2, both worth a read if political drama and power fantasy anime are your thing.

Right now, everything points toward yes, this is happening, it's just a question of patience. Between the sales numbers, the leaked renewal, and how strong that finale hit, Season 2 feels inevitable. Until anything official drops, rewatching that ending is honestly still hitting just as hard.
